Haling Manor in Roundy's Time

Memories

Tim Longhurst wrote: I was at HM from 1976 to 1981 and thought I'd share with you two instances that stick in my mind.
I recall during my first year a time when you rushed into our assembly unnannounced, bounded on to the stage and yelled something like "Which is the best school in Croydon?". We all naturally shouted back "Haling Manor" at the top of our voices and you quietly responded "true" and promptly left the room as abruptly as you entered it.
I remember also our first year Humanities lessons where we would all go off to Kendra to see you make a sort of multimedia presentation with sound, video and commentary. I recall you making a statement along the lines "in 100 billion years, the sun will explode and the entire universe will be destroyed". A number of my class almost fainted at the news and had to be comforted by our teacher and reassured that they, their children and countless other generations would be long dead by then!

I don't recall speaking to you personally during my time at HM, but I know that both you and the school left a lasting impression and I'm most grateful for the experience, not to mention the dedication of the teachers who served us.Thanks again for a most interesting site and fond memories. I wish you every health and success for 2002 and a lengthy and enjoyable retirement.

What about... the day of the fire? There were several over the 20 years, a bad one in Kendra started by a cigarette in the Gym and a bad one, late at night, in Pampisford started by an ex-pupil who was later arrested. We never closed.

I was reminded that those who joined in 1975 were told that they were the creme de la creme and anything that had happened to the school before did not count because they were only to be influenced by my touch! The arrogance of the old boy! But it did happen that in 1980 when they left they obtained the best result ever achieved by any year group in Haling Manor - even in these days of allegedly simpler examination styles. We would get lots of A's today when then they were C's in the good/bad old days.
Did you know that there are many teachers who were educated at the Manor (one is a headmaster), one 'boy' has become a major in the Marines, another is a film producer, several are lawyers, some are professional footballers, one is a football agent and several others own their own companies... quite a crowd!.... makes me proud!

At one point I put little green stickers on reports which meant that parents had to ring me... apparently this caused a bit of alarm.
And in the very early days when I hid in a cupboard in the sweet shop on the Brighton Road following complaints about behaviour. Returning to school in the afternoon I tannoyed the school (it worked then) and demanded that the 14 people I had recognized, 'Come to my office NOW!' - and to my astonishment 25 turned up

Rude things happening under the stage floor in Kendra!. Surely it was not true?
